Why we launched Biz School

Hey Reader,

If we were to turn this into just an email from Lyndon and properly brand it, what should we call it? (hit reply with ideas)

Messy Musings

This week I've been nerding out on the Personal IPO Summit put on by Nathan and Chenell who brought together some really great.

This slide from Jay Clause presentation on Tuesday has logged itself in my brain:

April was his lowest income month since 2023, and he emailed his entire email list (of creators) with a simple multiple choice question asking if other people were experiencing similar things.

~50% said sales are way down.

Things are changing around how people spend money & what they want to invest in right now. And we can't really avoid that and pretend that what has worked up until this point will keep working moving forward.

But Jay's presentation wasn't all doom and gloom, this was just setting the stage for where were at today so he could talk about all the opportunities that are popping up because of these changes.

This is something that Jo & I have been talking about a lot recently.

I believe we're entering a 'building phase' for creative entrepreneurs, where there's a ton of opportunities popping up for people willing to iterate, experiment, and take advantage of the new opportunities available (disrupting those that don't).

What does that look like in our business - rethinking what education looks like.

This week we launched Breakroom Biz School inside of The Breakroom.

And on the first page we told people NOT to do all the lessons ... ?

We're in an era where everyone's business is 1 of 1 - so it doesn't make sense for everyone to go through all the same lessons in a course. But Jo & I use a lot of tools strategically with our coaching clients, so we're building a library of videos, workbooks, & templates that people can pick up when they're struggling with that thing.

And each month we're going to check in on our members goals and tell them which 2 or 3 exercises will make the biggest difference for them each month.

Early results are that it's working:

It's not a course. It's also not coaching. It's something new that we haven't seen other people do before.

My question for you: what opportunities are popping up with everything that's changing right now that you can take advantage?

This Week's Needle Mover

Establish "CEO Days": Block off specific days, like "CEO Mondays" or "CEO Fridays," where you take zero client calls and strictly focus on working on your business instead of in it.

My go-to answer when someone out side the creative entrepreneur space asks us what a business coach does is:

"Most creatives start a business because they're passionate & really good at a craft (eg: photography, design, writing, systems, etc), but then they fairly quickly learn that they also have to run a business and that's our job: to help them build & run the business side that enables them to do what they love."

Our entire industry is predicated on creatives don't like to (or prioritize) working on their own business.

Turns out if you just set a routine & personal boundaries, that you'll be far more likely to work on your business one (whole) day per week, no exceptions - your creative brain will now have space for:

  • New Money: think about innovative offers (that your clients are already asking for but you never had time to build out)
  • New Leads: create that founder content you always dreamed of & never had time for
  • New Skills: finish one of those (countless) courses you've already paid for but literally never started
  • Make Better Decisions: have time to look at the numbers to know if your business is profitable..?

There's no such thing as a self managing business, and intentionally setting time to actually think about your own business will make you show up for your clients as a much more confident and less distracted service provider.

This Week on the Podcast

Have you ever wanted to burn your business to the ground?

Tatiana (@_tatianaforbes) did just that, she parted ways with multiple team members and took a 9-to-5 for a couple years.

Since then she's built Best For Last Run Club, become a well paid influencer, and grown an audience of over 80k people on Instagram.

We sat down with her to talk about her jouney, and what it takes to build an in-person community. And how it's profitable while being free for people to join.

Grab the free In-Person Community Blueprint Workbook we put together based on our conversation with Tatiana.

Hey Reader, We have a problem. We had a "light" calendar this week for the first time since May..? Which means we accidentally tried to make progress on a bunch of our own projects. As I'm typing this, I'm watching Claude literally click buttons on Canva/Chrome on the other screen trying to make a carousel to advertise our podcast episode going up tomorrow... it's... weird... and I'm not very worried about designers job security (I realize this is the worst possible way of having AI create...
