Hi Reader,

Are you stuck in a long airport layover while traveling, avoiding a conversation that's a little too political, or looking for a fun unique thing to bring up during thanksgiving dinner?

I've put together a curated list of a few emails & youtube videos that I've really enjoyed that I think you would also over this holiday break:

#1 Attempting 240miles in 100 hours

After climbing Kilimanjaro in June, I have a much greater appreciation for people that complete intense physical achievements. Also in the spirit of Thanksgiving Nate's whole family pitched in and ran literal marathons to pace him during the race.

#2 "Serving old ghosts instead of real people"

From Justin Welsh's email - We all remember insults

“When you build your business around avoiding criticism, you end up serving old ghosts instead of real people.
And the worst part is that while you're adjusting your entire strategy, the critic is long gone. They’ve moved on to criticizing other people. That's how most critics operate.
But you're still there, trying to be good enough for them. Watering down your personality, playing it safe, and making sure nothing you do could possibly upset some random person who's not even paying attention anymore.
And your actual audience? Your truly ideal customers? The people who want to hear from you? They get the diluted, lame-duck version of what they signed up for, because you’ve got your tail between your legs.”

I'd recommending reading the whole email, it was a great perspective.

#3 A (serious) home reno with transparent costs

We live in a 1940s fixer upper... and some days it feels like we took on an awful lot with this project. Then I watch a reno recap video like "I Spent 14 Months Rebuilding This 168 Year Old Home | Recap" and realize our project is easy in comparison. It's one of the coolest recaps I've seen in a long time for 2 reasons:

  1. He puts the price for every step, so we know how much he's spending or saving doing the work himself
  2. His 3D renders of the project are AMAZING, like showing where he's taking our a roof or moving walls - even his mock ups of what the rooms will look like when he's done (he's still got a long ways to go)

#4 "Social Media shouldn't move fast. Speed literally doesn't matter"

Future Social is Jack Appleby's weekly email for brands & marketers that work for brands. Last week he sent this email, with the below summary in the intro paragraph - it also has some great stats about marketers (I'd recommending reading the whole thing):

"If you really think about it, speed only really matters if your social strategy’s focused on attaching to whatever’s trending or floating around social. Which, hey, is worth doing sometimes when your brand’s got a natural tie, but it’s no secret I think wayyy too many brands care wayyy too much about trends."

#5 "40 Reflections as I turn 40"

Amanda Goetz has had a busy couple of months this fall - her book (Toxic Grit) came out, she launched a new podcast with Girlboss (Ambition 2.0), and she turned 40.

Last month around her birthday, she shared a list of 40 things she would go back and tell herself at 30 when her life was falling apart. Here's a couple of my favorites:

#10: The people who don’t want you to change usually benefit from you staying the same.
#38: The need to control everything is rooted in chaos. Find internal stability, and you won’t need as much external stability.

We're going with a summer throwback since it feels like spring in Indy right now Hey Reader, Welcome back! After two weeks off from writing our weekly emails, we're coming back to you with a new idea of what our email in 2026 could look like. Below in the Messy Middle we'll break down why we're making this change. We Wrote That You had a great discovery call, the client was excited about starting to work with you, and they paid their deposit with no hesitation - they seemed like an ideal...

Hi Reader, In a little under 3 weeks we've done 3000+ miles of driving, not including our normal driving while at home. Across all those miles we followed a trusty GPS to get us to where we were going. But even with that, one missed turn would delay how long it would take us to get to our destination. If we go back as little as one or two centuries, there was no GPS or even printed maps - traveling was based on understanding the direction you were heading (and/or traveling with someone who's...

Hi Reader, Like much of the entrepreneurial world, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting on this year. The beginning of this year took us both by surprise in ways we didn’t expect. Like many of us, we came into the year with big goals and aspirations. We started taking action on those goals & making them known, only to be met with resistance we didn’t anticipate (something that doesn’t shock me at all now, but at the time felt like a blow to the stomach). There’s a phrase that is attributed to...
