so chatGPT leads are a thing now...

Hey Reader,

It's getting hard to avoid... we're adding chatGPT to our Lead Gen strategy. Here's 2 things I've seen in the last week.

Once is a fluke:

Twice means there's something there:

So I went digging... it turns out we've interviewed some really smart people on The Sustainable Creator. Here's a couple quotes from episodes:

There's a lot of conversation about, 'I want my business to be recommended by AI.' And really what that comes back to is just having like a really good SEO. And those are not in two different silos. - @thekinfolkcreative on Ep36 about copywriting
The keywords, especially now with AI and SEO, it is huge thinking about your brand and keywords... understanding that you're a photographer local to Orlando and that you are a family photographer helps... - @macey_miller on Ep30 on high converting websites
Where the AI piece comes into play is more heavily with your blogs, most likely and making sure that you have blogs that are answering similar questions... making sure that you're answering that in the way that it would answer it... congregating that information... so that it can recommend you or pull from you and cite you as a source and hopefully get a click through...

So if they're searching for your service in a certain way, sometimes we love to title our services really cute names... but making sure that we also title it something somewhere on that page that says what it is... so that chatGPT and others can be like, 'Hey, I recommend this person based on what you're saying'. - @littlecreativecompany on Ep7 on SEO to increase visibility

As we're in the process of soft relaunching our website this week 🤫, I've been thinking about AEO a lot when it comes to how I want to put our podcasts on the website. And this is how I'm thinking about podcast blogs specifically (I'm not an expert, this is an experiment):

  1. Headings as questions or keyword dense rather than witty - I love writing blog posts like I write newsletters... but they're not exactly great at surfacing the best quotable one sentence answers, and I don't want to lose that. But I can do a much better job of "packaging" in smaller sections with more descriptive H2s & H3s, so they'll be more scanable while also being much easier to chat bots to know whats in each section.
  2. Including "takeaways" as a list of one sentence bullets - AI likes to quote things, so making it really easy to just lift a sentence out of a takeaway/summary makes it more likely for my podcast blog to be referenced (and linked).
  3. Including a rapid fire/FAQ section on blog posts - not gonna lie this feels a little weird, but then I realized we include TLDRs in a bunch of stuff, this is just a reformatting of a TLDR on a blog post into something in a Q->A format so that AI can directly pull an answer if it ever gets a matching question.
  4. Listicles - buzzfeed trained all us millenials that grew up on facebook to appreciate a good numbered list of "top 5..." or "5 ways to...", and that's only transitioned into the chatbots - they love a good listicle, and quoting them (i think), so if I can put concepts in easily digestible numbered lists (when applicable) I will be
  5. *sigh* Keywords - this is both the hardest one for me to get excited about and the most important, so I'm strictly telling my underpaid intern (chatGPT) to care on my behalf 🤷‍♂️

And if you've been thinking about SEO for years, I doubt any of this is ground breaking... but it's something I'm starting to experiment with, and will report back once we have more data on how it's going.

Oh also - it turns out that all these "optimizations" are also really good for short attention spans and people that are just skimming.. so it's kinda a 'two birds one stone' situation.

When I followed up with Lily about what made the difference for her getting a lead from chatGPT this is what she had to say:

This is the value of having a focused community of creative service providers, we share what's working, what we're learning, and what we're experimenting with in real time - you can see details here on our new sales page for Creative Maven Society (🤫 it ~90% done).

Have you gotten any leads for chatGPT? I'd love to hear what you're experimenting with &/or what's already working for you!

Hey Reader, We're a speedboat playing by container ship rules I said this to Jo in passing this week, but it's stuck with me. We're entrepreneurs, small business owners, and we definitely shouldn't have "red tape" to cut through when we get excited about things. Don't we make the rules? 🤔 Somehow, my MBA "container ship" business planning had crept into some of our Q4 planning, and we were revisiting if that really was the right approach for us. But first, what do I mean by this: Speedboats...
