November Recap: Membership Edition

Hi Reader,

We just wrapped our first full month of The Breakroom (our membership for creative service providers), so we thought it'd be fun to break down what we learned, things we're changing, and a couple of our favorite posts.

Since you like to nerd out, too, here's the stats:

  • $4,272.80 total revenue so far
  • 15 Members
  • 1 Cancellation (who is actually interested in 1:1 coaching instead)
  • 10 Calls
  • 36 Posts
  • 35% on quarterly or bi-annual plans
  • 2 new signups per week on average (post-launch push)

And that's just the first full month. 😳

It's wild to us how much this space has grown in such a short amount of time. We're so grateful for it (and having the best time growing it intentionally).

If you haven't picked up on it yet, we care a lot about this space and the business owners inside. That means we're constantly having conversations around how to better support our members and how we can continue to improve. So, on that note...

What we've learned:

  • People buy education but stay for community - the things that have driven the most inquiries are masterclasses, book club, & hot seat coaching. But, almost everyone who's attended one of the Peer Masterminds so far ranks it as one of their favorite features.
  • Everybody is an expert in something - part of us (Jo & Lyndon) improving as moderators, to ensure everyone feels welcome & safe, is paying attention to each persons "random" interests and skills. Being able to connect back to those points when applicable in a conversation creates great conversations (no matter how "new" in business they are)
  • We're all awkward at first - we've loved watching how people come out of their shell as they attend more calls & become more confident. As entrepreneurs we spend a lot of time alone, so even if you want community, it takes time to become comfortable being yourself "in a room" when you haven't been in a space like this recently. That's part of why we moderate and give structure to the calls.
  • People want structure - without an agenda on Peer Masterminds, people just stare at each other not sure what to do - but as we've iterated on the agenda and instructions (eg: when you ask a question please include 1-2 sentences of context, and end with one sentence that ends with a question mark), people have become more active on calls because they know what's expected of them.

What we're changing/have changed:

  • Simplifying the spaces in Circle - when we first launched, I think we had 9 separate spaces for people to post things in our online platform, and it just confused people. So we fairly quickly centralized down to 3 main spaces: 1) Ask the community a question, 2) Share a win, 3) General (for everything else).
  • Adding a "Start Here" - we had a simple onboarding message "please introduce yourself" at first, and we found we were answering questions and following up with people about stuff like downloading the mobile app, so we wrote out a simple post that broke down how the online community worked & what was expected of them.
  • Put the calls directly on peoples calendars - it's great scheduling all the calls in an online platform, but if that requires people to go in and add each call to their calendar manually...most people miss calls. We created a shared google calendar that we invite every member to that we update so everything is automatically on their calendar even if they don't log into circle at all.
  • Creating Quarterly Focuses - this is something we're going to experiment with starting in January. We have a pretty good idea of what our Q1 focus/theme will be for the group, which will mean you'll know what masterclasses to expect for Jan-March (stay tuned).

We're going with a summer throwback since it feels like spring in Indy right now Hey Reader, Welcome back! After two weeks off from writing our weekly emails, we're coming back to you with a new idea of what our email in 2026 could look like. Below in the Messy Middle we'll break down why we're making this change. We Wrote That You had a great discovery call, the client was excited about starting to work with you, and they paid their deposit with no hesitation - they seemed like an ideal...

Hi Reader, In a little under 3 weeks we've done 3000+ miles of driving, not including our normal driving while at home. Across all those miles we followed a trusty GPS to get us to where we were going. But even with that, one missed turn would delay how long it would take us to get to our destination. If we go back as little as one or two centuries, there was no GPS or even printed maps - traveling was based on understanding the direction you were heading (and/or traveling with someone who's...

Hi Reader, Like much of the entrepreneurial world, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting on this year. The beginning of this year took us both by surprise in ways we didn’t expect. Like many of us, we came into the year with big goals and aspirations. We started taking action on those goals & making them known, only to be met with resistance we didn’t anticipate (something that doesn’t shock me at all now, but at the time felt like a blow to the stomach). There’s a phrase that is attributed to...
